In traditional medicine, ginger and its extracts are used to treat inflammation. In addition, ginger and its phenolic secondary metabolites, known as gingerols, have been shown to contain potent anti-arthritic effects in an experimental model of rheumatoid arthritis. In a study published in the journal PharmaNutrition, researchers from The University of Arizona and The University of Kansas have found that ginger essential oils also contains anti-inflammatory properties that may help prevent and treat chronic inflammation in the joints.
In the study, the researchers examined the anti-inflammatory effects of ginger essential oil in female mice with arthritis. Then, they treated these subjects with ginger essential oil. The essential oil of ginger is said to contain terpenes with phytoestrogenic activity.
The results revealed that the administration of ginger essential oil prevented chronic joint inflammation. Moreover, the effects of ginger essential oil against arthritis were similar to those of 17-beta estradiol. Although the essential oil of ginger has been reported to have phytoestrogenic activity, it did not cause any effect on estrogen-responsive organs, such as the uterus or bone. Furthermore, the researchers ginger essential oil did not cause any side effect and was tolerated well.
Based on the findings of the study, the researchers concluded that the essential oil of ginger has protective effects against joint inflammation and arthritis.
Ginger essential oil has been used as a key component in ancient Ayurvedic medicine and aromatherapy. It has a sweet, but pungent scent, making it easily identifiable. It also blends well with other essential oils, such as citrus or lemongrass. Here are some of the benefits ginger essential oil can offer:
Ginger essential oil is primarily made from freshly harvested ginger roots, which are grated into smaller pieces to bring out the essential phytonutrients and chemical compounds that make up the base of the essential oil. These grated ginger roots are added to boiling water. As the water boils, the steam extracts the chemicals and phytonutrients from the organic material. These are then transferred into a separate cooling chamber that is connected to a flask. The vapor is cooled and condensed to form droplets of oil. This process is called steam distillation, the oldest and best way to produce essential oil. With this process, oil is produced at the highest grade and is free from chemicals and impurities.
